About me

Hi. I’m Josh Crockett, and this is BehindTheNet.org. I’ve been operating this website in various forms with various blogging engines since 2002, but I’ve had some form of web presence since 1995, dating back to administering my high school’s Linux server off a 56kbps frame relay link.

Nowadays, I’m a software developer (primarily Java) in Charlottesville, Virginia. I grew up just down the road in Midlothian, a suburb of Richmond, and graduated from Virginia Tech in 2002 with a computer science major and history minor. Since then, I spent almost two years across the river from Midlothian in Short Pump, then three in Reston less than ten minutes from Washington-Dulles International Airport.

I like travel, I like sports, and I’m a geek. This leads to the accumulation of reams of statistical data, most of which is completely useless and uninteresting to anyone but me. But since it’s my webspace, I’ll at least go in summary form as of April 2008:

Geography:

  • 5 sovereign countries
    • USA
    • UK (spring 2001, spring 2003, winter 2003-04)
    • France (spring 2003)
    • Canada (summer 2003++)
    • Ireland (winter 2003-04)
  • 36 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia (next new: Oregon, August 2008)
  • 633 U.S. counties/equivalents
  • 48 distinct airports, 110 flight segments

Sports:

  • 12 major league baseball stadia (next new: Coors Field, August 2008)
  • 9 NHL arenas (most recent new: Mellon Arena, February 2008)
  • 17 stadia in which I’ve seen college football (next new: Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, NE, September 2008)

It also leads to a lot of photos, which I store at Flickr. Browse the sets for organization by trip and/or location, or the tags if you’d like a topic-focused approach.

I used to try to post every 2-3 days. That’s not happening any more. So if you don’t hear from me for a few days… or months? That’s real life creeping back in. It’s important to pay attention to that sometimes too.
