Thankful '05

  • my fiancée
  • the Washington Nationals
  • frequent-flyer miles
  • ego-puncturing losses to remind us: “win or lose, we’ll greet you with a glad returning / You’re the pride of VPI…”
  • mart-lifting the C3
  • the Yudites (even Jeff G. and DCNAB)
  • road games with the Hokie Nation
  • an office across the street from Metro: 45 minutes from desk to RFK
  • or an office next door to Best Buy, with an easy shortcut to the back lot of Tysons
  • my first-baseman’s stretch to cover a Db octave in Maple Leaf Rag
  • Volkswagen diesel
  • Hurricanes 8, Flyers 6: my first in-person Canes win ever
  • Seth Greenberg and the joy of being the underdog
  • crazy weekend travel stunts
  • the new NHL (and XM 204 to follow it by)
  • have I mentioned my fiancée?

  1. If you and Heidi aren’t about the cutest thing…

(well, except for one certain very tiny person in my own life…)

  3. I hope you didn’t have a lot of trouble getting back up to NoVa on Sunday; it sure was a mess. Thus, I’m thankful for alternatives to 81 when the going gets tough.

  4. I would love to see a C3 mart lift. I can do a C5 mart “plunk.” I am with you on the VW diesel!

  5. Bret: we took the Home Place route at first, tried to drop down to 81 and saw it was at a standstill. We decided to stop and plot something entirely different, since the obvious bailout 11 would be nearly as bad as 81:

419N back to 311N right turn on 779, follow 15-20(?) mi to left on 630, follow to T at 220 in Fincastle left on 220N to I-64E near Clifton Forge 64E one exit to VA 42 North 42 at least to Harrisonburg, continue to Woodstock if necessary

Once back to H’burg, we took a peek over at 81 and saw it was moving, so we got on. H promptly spotted a Hokie RV that she had seen leaving Blacksburg at the same time we did. So our adventure didn’t cost us any time, and we got to drive quite a bit of the VA Alleghenies that neither of us had seen before. And no road rage. :)

  6. It’s a beautiful drive…you may recall my folks live on 779, although you didn’t go that far. Erin and I take the I-64/220 route every holiday and it is beautiful (and never busy!) I’m always astounded at how much Botetourt County there is before you finally hit Alleghany.

  8. Mike: yep, I remember — wouldn’t know the route so well otherwise. :) Taught my brother (forestry soph) the route coming down on Saturday, and he was very happy.

HE: yeah, so is free time, but I’m not getting a lot of that either. Hoping to have a VT-FSU preview tonight once I get settled in Jax.
