VT-USC: What Did We Learn?

Number 1 Southern Cal beat Virginia Tech 24-13 Saturday night in Landover, MD, in a game far more competitive than many expected. So what did we learn from this first game of the season?

  • The kids are alright
Out of 75 players dressed for the game, 24 were freshmen, and some played key roles: WR Josh Hyman, WR/KR Eddie Royal, LBs Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi (before Adibi tore a bicep, a probable season-ending injury), and kickoff man Jared Develli. All acquitted themselves well, which bodes well for the coming years.
  • We might have a placekicker
Last year, the kicking game was a struggle. Then-senior Carter Warley never really recovered from his sophomore year back troubles, and every so often replacements were tried out: Jon Mollerup, Brandon Pace, Nic Schmitt, none of whom distinguished themselves. This year, sophomore Brandon Pace secured a starting spot in the preseason and hit two nice field goals Saturday night. It’s a little early to get excited, but the indications so far are good.
  • The defensive line is scary good
The VT front four absolutely dominated USC’s young offensive line. This and the defensive backfield are perhaps the only units that aren’t young on this Hokie team, and the return of Jim Davis solidifies an already good group here.
  • We have tight ends
Tight end has usually been an afterthought in VT’s offense, but Jeff King ran wild on Saturday, catching four balls for 65 yards that made him VT’s leading receiver; Jared Mazzetta tacked on another 22-yard reception.
  • Referees hate us
    ‘Nuff said.

What do you think? Let’s hear it.

Comments on “VT-USC: What Did We Learn?”

  1. The coaching staff seems to be beginning to learn something I’ve been saying for a while. As much as we like to be a power running team, when the other team stacks eight or even nine in the box, the time is ripe for play-action passes. The short passing game looked decent to my eyes Saturday night, including a play where Southern Cal stacked nine in the box, I muttered “play-action, play-action, play-action”, and lo and behold, they actually did! (I am so smart. SMRT. ;-))

And yeah, with regard to #5, there’s nothing to say but “We got hosed, Timmy. We got hosed.”

  2. Just FYI, the “probable” can be removed before “season-ending injury”, according to TSL. The front 7 looked great, and the secondary wasn’t bad except blown coverages. That sounds like a stupid thing to say when every USC score was on a big play, but these looked like freshman mistakes that can be corrected…as opposed to things you can’t coach, such as speed coughronyell or attitude coughdeangelo. Randall still worries me, he had some real accuracy problems after he abandoned the run post-phantom-pass-interference-call. All in all though, we hung a whole lot tougher than I thought we would, and I’ve said before that we needed to start a season with a loss just to knock down the insanity a little bit. A “good loss” if there is such a thing, outside of the injury.

  3. Alright, I just got back from the Caribbean and BTN was the first commentary I looked up on the game. But first a slight rant…

WHY, WHY, WHY was there no ESPN on the ship’s sattelite and WHY, WHY, WHY did ABC (fellow Go network affilliate) NEVER mention, not even give a score update, not once at all Saturday night?!?!?! There were two newly married, disgruntled Hokie fans on the water that night!

    —end rant—

From what I read in USA Today paper in the airport (ouch folks, that’s how desperate I was) they actually gave credit to Tech and their program, not just a “USC underacheived in the game” crap. They spoke well of Randall and our defense (which surprises me after reading the BTN preview) And they mentioned the… eh’hem, blown call by the Refs. I have yet to see the offending play, but tis probably for the best.

  4. Random rant:

Grrrr! The Steelers cut Nathaniel Adibi!! Mostly because he was hurt for a good part of camp, but still. Meanwhile, my friend the Browns fan (not Phil) is telling me how great Suggs is looking this camp, what a great attitude he has, blah-blah-blah-I-already-know. Rough week for the Adibis!

  5. I live in Atlanta and the entire week leading up to the game, as well as all offseason, had to listen to people talk about how Tech is not going to be any good and doesn’t deserve to be in the ACC. The so called experts talked about how we lost so much and never procduce when we need to. How we bring nothing of value to the ACC, etc. I hope that they all watched the USC game and saw that things have not gone straight into the crapper at VT. The defense looked strong and fast, the offense showed that they will still be able to put points on the board and the coaching staff seems to be doing a great job of getting the team ready and getting the right calls in to the team.
