Say Hello to... BTN Reviews

I’m introducing a new set of categories into BTN today: Reviews.

Since I began this blog, most of my entries have either been opinion pieces or extended topical essays, with the occasional travelogue. The common denominator: they’re all long. It’d be nice to write some short pieces — and that might also increase my posting frequency, which has slowed down considerably since the end of the ACC expansion drama.

The other factor influencing this decision is that I’ve backed away from a site where I used to do quite a bit of writing, Everything2.com. E2 is tough to define, but the best definition I heard was “a user-written, collaboratively-filtered encyclopedia.” I contributed a good amount in the early days of E2, but as requirements went up (to near those of a real encyclopedia) and the liberal political bias of contributors remained, it became less fun. So now I’m playing in my own sandbox, but I need a corner in which to put some of the things I would have done there.

Put those together, and you have two main areas of interest about which I’d like to write more: sports venues (mostly meaning baseball parks) and transit (highly opinionated reviews of mass-transit systems I’ve used as a visitor to certain regions). The transit stuff fits into a current category just fine, but sports venues don’t. I’ve also added a “Reviews: Etc.” category for stuff that doesn’t quite fit in. I’ll be creating a subsite soon, reviews.behindthenet.org, on which these entries will be highlighted and future topics will be listed.

Now also seems to be a good time to highlight the notification list — since I’ll be writing more frequently, it stands to reason that some of you might want to be notified when I add something new. So, enter your e-mail address below (or in the box to the left; it goes to the same place) and click to add yourself to the mailing list. Addresses will be kept private.

e-mail goes here:

UPDATE: OK, this idea failed miserably. If I post reviews, they’ll be part of the most appropriate existing category — likely sports, travel/transit, or life for the random stuff.
