BTN Weekend Roundup

Just checking in with some quick takes on the weekend’s events.

First expansion: we got nothin’. Not even any really good rumors or wild ideas out there. The usual suspects said expansion was still on; other usual suspects said not so fast. All we know is that there wasn’t a successful ACC conference call on Monday. (By the way, BTN would like to thank Eric McErlain for the ACC coverage compliments on Friday — and to apologize for the 404s some of you probably got following his link. Hopefully we didn’t lose you permanently.)

(Newport News) Daily Press columnist David Teel suggested Saturday that the ACC and Big East form an alliance. Although he was actually responding to another compromise plan, I think TSL’s Capitol Hokie’s description of it as a “non-aggression pact” would be appropriate here, both in intent and in potential for long-term success.

I’ll also offer here the first (and quite possibly last) BTN commentary related to the NBA, in order to give my congratulations to David Robinson on retiring in the best way possible, with a championship ring. In a league where the future appears to be left to the Bowling Alley Brawler and his ilk, Robinson stood out as one of the few decent men left.
Congrats, Admiral, and thank you.

Roger Clemens won his 300th game this weekend, on his fourth try, and celebrated by threatening to boycott the induction ceremony if the Hall of Fame voters inducted him as anything other than a New York Yankee (which basically means he doesn’t want to be wearing a Boston Red Sox cap on his bronze plaque in the Hall). I’ll probably always think of Clemens as a BoSox player, but Jim Rome pointed out on his Monday show that he did win his World Series rings and accomplish most of his long-term career milestones as a Yankee. Only his Cy Young Awards were spread out: 1986, 1987 and 1991 with the Red Sox, 1997 and 1998 with Toronto, then 2001 with the Yanks. (The choice of cap, incidentally, was taken away from the players after long-time Red Sox 3B Wade Boggs reportedly signed a contract obligating him to choose to wear a Tampa Bay Devil Rays cap in the Hall.) I think the Clemens issue really boils down to this, though: if you’re a Red Sox fan, do you really want this jack#$% representing your team in the Hall?

In personal life, the weekend was slightly more productive, with a visit from someone special :) and a decision Friday afternoon that I needed to do something random. So I’m heading for Montréal this weekend — 5:40 PM out of RIC Friday night, 5:10 out of YUL Sunday. I’ve always been kinda interested in catching a baseball game in French, and now is as good a time as any — especially since the Expos probably aren’t long for Québec. (Eric McErlain is pretty certain that whereever they head, D.C. won’t be it.)

“But Josh,” you say, “how can you go on yet another wild travel adventure when you still haven’t posted the Europe photos you promised us three months ago?”

Well, wait no longer.

And hopefully Montréal pics won’t take quite as long to show up.
