Welcome To AT&T Broadband, Screw You

Welcome to the World of AT&T Broadband!

Effective February 1, 2003, the monthly rate for Expanded service will increase $2.72. The new rate for Full Standard service will be $37.21 monthly.

We trust that you are enjoying your digital cable service. Effective with your next billing statement, the rate for your Digital Standard package will increase $5.00 to $54.99 monthly. Each month your digital Standard package saves you almost $7.00 over our regular rates.

That’s verbatim, from the first bill I received from my friends at AT&T. Personally, I always love to be “welcomed” with a rate hike.

And $37.21 minus $54.99 equals “almost $7.00”? Somebody needs to go back to third-grade math. It looks to me like I’m saving negative $17.78 with digital cable. Fox Sports World is awesome, though… it looks like I have two decisions to make.

  1. Are one entire channel dedicated to world soccer (plus a little bit of rugby) plus three regional Fox Sports channels that mostly show college basketball together worth $17.78 a month? I don’t watch anything else on the digital package, except for the week I got a free preview of NHL Center Ice.
  2. Am I irritated enough with AT&T to call them out here again (read: sit here an entire afternoon) to have them take their freakin’ digital cable box back?

The other alternative, as mentioned previously, is to tell AT&T where they can shove their “service”, and order DirecTV. Hmmmmm.

Other than that, things are going pretty well. Got the Europe trip planned, reserved and ready to roll (thanks, Amy, for the place to crash in Paris!). Work is… well, work. Completely against my will, I’ve become a Java monkey. There are worse fates, I guess. Midwinters and a close-by special day are coming soon :). And I’ve found a church where I don’t feel quite as self-conscious, and people actually talked to me from the start. (Plus, the choir is flat-out awesome — that always helps my opinion of a place.)

Socio-political rants I can save for another time. Besides, the content is pretty predictable if you know me anyway.
