Beamer to face discipline from Big East

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (AP) (November 20, 2002, 10:55 PM EST) — Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer is expected to face discipline from the Big East office after launching into a profanity-laced tirade and causing approximately $55,000 in property damage Wednesday night after Virginia Tech’s 21-18 loss to a Big East officiating crew and West Virginia.

“I’m just sick and f#@$ing tired of our boys playing their f#@%ing hearts out and having the officials d#$@ them over. Football should be played on the field by the f@#$ing players, not by f@#$ing pansies in striped f@#$ing shirts. We are the only football team in the entire d#$@ed country that has to win games six times over for it to count,” said Beamer. He then stormed out, directing a student manager to “burn the f@#$er.”

Two more managers then dragged in a hastily-constructed effigy of a referee doused in gasoline, laid it on the dais, and lit a match. ESPN game announcers Rod Gilmore and Steve Levy received second-degree burns in the resulting explosion, and the fire spread to two adjoining rooms as the press evacuated. Virginia Tech Police Lt. John Smith later said that no charges would be filed against Beamer or the managers, as “we just wish it had been a real referee, and that it’d have killed those two jack!@$es.”

Yes, I know Coach Beamer would never do this. This is satire, based on what probably should have happened after that miserable hosing of a game. You can laugh now.
